Birth 1734  South Kilvington, Yorks Find all individuals with events at this location
    • Several births of a John Welbank in Yorkshire in 1734, this one has William as father. It takes place soon after William Welbank of South Cowton inherits the farm from his father, giving him the opportunity to rent out the land, move away and marry. John Welbank of Carlton Husthwaite appears to come from a North Cowton family, because he owns land in North Cowton, mentioned in his Will.

    1768-1847 Welbanks
John Welbank bought the Manor House and its farm, and moved from Upsall
to be Carlton's leading (gentleman) farmer. When his son, also called John,
inherited in 1804 the property list showed the house as two distinct dwellings.
Two generations of the family had been living as separate households, a
pattern that had probably continued since the distant Kitchingman past. In
1841 John and his brother William, both unmarried, were living in one part
of the house; in the other part were their housekeeper and several male
and female farm servants. The second John Welbank died in 1846. By will
everything was left to his brother and heirs; failing heirs the house and land
were to go to a godson, Leonard Peckitt of Carlton Hall. William Welbank
died a year and a day after his brother, without heir.
