Generation: 1

  1. 1.  Thomas Welbank was christened on 5 Dec 1715 in All Saints, Northallerton, Yorkshire, England; died in 1744; was buried on 27 Apr 1744 in All Saints, Northallerton, Yorkshire, England.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Occupation: shoemaker

Thomas married Mary Smith [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Children:
    1. 2. Christopher (new) Welbank  Descendancy chart to this point was christened on 25 Feb 1743 in All Saints, Northallerton, Yorkshire, England (perhaps, see note); died on 27 Jun 1786 in Southampton Buildings, Holborn; was buried in All Saints, Isleworth, Middlesex.

Generation: 2

  1. 2.  Christopher (new) Welbank Descendancy chart to this point (1.Thomas1) was christened on 25 Feb 1743 in All Saints, Northallerton, Yorkshire, England (perhaps, see note); died on 27 Jun 1786 in Southampton Buildings, Holborn; was buried in All Saints, Isleworth, Middlesex.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Note: The problem here is to work out which of the many Christophers in England around that time was our Christopher who married Ann Knapp. I am pretty confident that this Christopher is the direct ancestor of all Welbanks in England today. His family with Ann Knapp are well documented as our branch.
    • Occupation: Attorney at Law
    • Note: 30 Jun 1760, ; Welbank Christopher the younger of Hatton Garden Middx gent [completes articles with] Christopher Welbank the elder of Hatton Garden gent. 5 years 30th June 1760. (Kings Bench, Registers of Affidavits of Due Execution, National Archives KB170/14) Christopher of Southampton Buildings is presumably Christopher the Younger. The same address and name suggests they were relatives. Christopher Welbank of Mount Pleasant Northallerton (1720-93) lived at Hatton Garden. He is a likely candidate for Christopher the Elder. At the moment Christopher, his older brother's son, is the most likely candidate for Christopher the Younger, as a fairly close relative who is the right age to complete articles in 1760 (at a pinch: he would have been articled in 1755, at age 12). So Christopher (new) Welbank has been given the birth details of Christopher of Mount Pleasant's nephew. On the other hand the record doesn't state that the two Christophers are nephew and uncle, so Christopher the Younger might be a related Christopher who doesn't appear in the parish records.
    • Note: 1767; Admitted to the Queen's Bench (Rolls of Attorney, National Archives KB 172/1)
    • Note: 1779; Joseph Lockall articled to Christopher Welbank of Dyer's Buildings. In the papers, Christopher says he is an attorney at the Queen's Bench and also in the Courts of Chancery. This will be Christopher the Younger, as the older Christopher has moved to Northallerton. Mr Welbank of Dyer's Buildings appears as attorney in many bankruptcy cases in 1776, 1778, 1779, then Mr Welbank of Gray's Inn in cases in 1781, 1783, Welbank and Rain of Gray's Inn in cases from 1784 and 1785 (various newspapers).
    • Note: 2 Nov 1779, St Andrew's Holborn; 2 Nov 1779 by Licence Christopher Welbank, Bachelor of St Andrew, Holborn, London Ann Knapp, Spinster of St Andrew, Holborn Married by Tho's Clark 1st Witness: Catherine Knapp 2nd Witness: Margaret Knapp
    • Note: 1782, Nat. Archives C12/2128/12; Lawsuit Price V Welbank against Christopher Welbank of Southhampton Buildings. Samuel Price, Dublin-based bookseller and brother of the deceased, is co-executor with Christopher Welbank and complains that Welbank has made decisions about the funeral without consulting him and has not paid over the proceeds from sale of annuities. Welbank agrees he didn't inform Price because they are not getting along, and admits he hasn't paid all the proceeds over, although he assures the court that he will do so shortly.
    • Residence: 1782, Lamb's Conduit Street.; Address given in Mary Ann's christening record.
    • Note: 1785; Christopher Wilbank attorney of 15 Southhampton Buildings, fire insurance for £400. Also land tax paid at Old Southampton Buildings in 1785 and 1786.
    • Note: 25 Feb 1785; John Jones apprenticed to Christopher Welbank attorney of Gray's Inn.
    • Residence: 1786, Southampton Buildings, Holborn; mentioned in son James Freedom of City record as 'son of Christopher Welbank late of Southampton Buildings, Holborn.
    • Note: 10 Nov 1797; Dated 10 Nov 1797 "To our well beloved in Christ, Margaret Knapp spinster, the aunt, next of kin and ? or Guardian lawfully and ? to James Welbank, Mary Ann Welbank spinster, Richard Welbank and Frances Welbank spinster, minors, the natural, lawful and only children of Ann Smith formerly Welbank late of Fee Rent in the Parish of St Andrew Holborn in the county of Middlesex." [Margaret KNAPP - PCC 1802] £5 to brother Thomas Knapp, and William his son, £2 to John his son. £5 to great-niece Mary Welbank. Frances gets a small mahogany bureau, a watch, earrings necklaces jewellery and "all the best of my wearing apparel" silks laces muslins and linen. Notes:

    Died:
fever acquired while canvassing for the post of coroner for Middlesex.

Notices in the Daily Universal Register of the 24th and 26th June 1786, from Christopher regretting that he can't canvass the voters due to sudden illness, then notices from Ann Welbank announcing his death and suggesting the voters choose a candidate who is prepared to pay her an allowance out of the income. However, they chose the man who had already been filling in for the former coroner during his terminal illness, who had declined to pay her anything.
